Recycle your glass containers!
New glass pulverizer has arrived in the PRRD!
Glass container recycling was reintroduced back into the PRRD recycling stream in April 2010. Since that time, we have been stockpiling the glass waiting for our new glass pulverizer to arrive. The time has finally come!
This new equipment is a unique solution to the glass recycling problem. Many municipalities in Canada look at glass as a nuisance product. It has very low market value, and is extremely cost ineffective to ship to smelters. Many recycling programs do not accept glass for recycling. Of the municipalities that do accept glass, many ship it to the landfill to be used as daily landfill cover. Our goal is to keep as much material out of the landfill as possible. Glass is no exception!
Our region’s new glass pulverizer crushes glass to the consistency of sand or gravel. The end product has no sharp edges or paper/lid contamination. It is safe enough to use in your child’s sandbox!
Once crushed, there are many end uses for the product: sandblasting sand, sand bags, ice control (sand replacement), decorative products (stepping stones, pottery), pipe drainage, gravel substitute for muddy shop yards, and the list goes on…
