FORT ST. JOHN CURBSIDE RECYCLING PILOT PROJECT

Thursday, September 18, 2008

Recycling rates in the region have experienced rapid growth over the past year. In Fort St. John, the recycling rates have increased by 250%; region wide they have increased by more than 40%. Recycling will continue to increase as people put more emphasis on protecting the environment and reducing their environmental footprint.

Given the surge in recycling rates and the delays within government to start a full scale curbside collection program, the Eco-Depot Recycling Centre has decided to undertake a 3-month curbside recycling pilot project within the city starting October 1, 2008.

The City of Fort St. John is in need of a curbside recycling program to encourage the community to recycle and to make it as easy as possible to do so. The Eco-Depot’s curbside recycling pilot project is the first step to implementing curbside recycling collection citywide.

Recycling will be collected bi-weekly on the same day as garbage collection. The collection area will be from 108 Avenue north (within city limits). The cost to participants is $15 / month. There is no bag limit for the recycling collection service. The following materials will be collected at the curb: plastic, cardboard, tin, paper, milk cartons, aluminum and boxboard. Participants will receive a curbside recycling starter kit, which includes a supply of blue bags and information on collection and sorting.

In order to prepare for this pilot project, the Eco-Depot has undergone extensive upgrades, including a new state-of-the-art auto-tie baler, a new sorting area and additional staff.
